The Amazon Rainforest: The Richest Life Source on Earth

The Amazon Rainforest is a jewel worth preserving for generations to come. Why it is so important to keep the Amazon Rainforest alive?  We all have to be reminded that 20% of the oxygen we breathe is generated from the Amazon Rainforest; that the Amazon Rainforest content 20% of the Earth’s fresh water; that 33% of ALL species (insects, mammals, plants) live within the Amazon River basin.  It is of the highest importance to bring the awareness about this treasure we actually blindly jeopardize.

Dr. Roger Mustalish from ACEER recently shared at the Annual Amazon Herb Summit that preservation projects are good but not a sustainable solution to preserve the Amazon Rainforest.  What would be that solution, then?  A sustainable way to use the Amazon Rainforest resources’ is the way to go.  In bypassing previous strategies such as cutting the trees down for lumber or raising cattle or soybean monoculture, creating ecobusiness models based on sustainable use of the Amazon Rainforest resources is the solution to keep alive and thriving.  What the Amazon Herb Company is now doing is a great example.  Fair-trade and sustainable harvesting of Amazon herbs is a great way to preserve the aliveness of the Rainforest.

Another point shared by Dr. Mustalish during the same presentation is the importance of “inter being” meaning that everySustainably harvesting Amazon herbs are part of the solution. action taken by every beings impacts the whole ecosystem ie. the whole planet.  A direct impact of cutting trees on large area is the changes in the rainfall patterns.  Before, rainfalls were going from west to east all over the Amazon Rainforest.  Now, because the Amazon Rainforest is so broke up, the rainfalls are going from south to north, causing droughts where there should be rain and floods where it is unexpected.

In a recent documentary from Jean-Michel Cousteau Ocean Adventures, Return to the Amazon, Jean-Michel Cousteau’s summarized simply and firmly the situation: “This Amazon is part of our life, whether we live here or not.”
